Davaar Island / cave painting

Davaar is a tidal island and is linked to the mainland by a natural shingle causeway called the Dhorlin.
The island, which attracts hundreds of visitors every year, is famous for its cave painting – a life size image of the crucifixion – which was painted, in secret, by local artist Archibald MacKinnon in 1887. It is said he had a dream telling him where to paint it. Over the years the elements have taken their toll and it has been restored several times, including twice by Mr MacKinnon, as well as by the former head of art at Campbeltown Grammar School Ronald Togneri.
