Gigha
Ogham Stone
The Ogham Stone can be difficult to locate as it is on top of a knoll which is surrounded Gorse bushes. When you first view it the stone looks plain and undecorated but once you take a closer look you can see that this is not the case. It in fact engraved with marks that are in fact letter of an antient Irish script called ogham script. This stone has some of the oldest surviving Gaelic texts in Scotland, written more than 1,400 years ago. The style of script and monument demonstrate links with Ireland.
The ancient words are thought to commemorate a man who was probably a king or chieftain based on Gigha. His name is too worn now to read.
The stone is protected by wooden fence and is partially encrusted in lichen but is well worth a visit. It is situated just beyond the ruins of Kilchattan Chapel
