East Kintyre
Saddell Castle
Saddell Castle was built in the 16th-century castle on the shore of the Kilbrannan Sound in Kintyre. It originally served as a bastion of the MacDonald family for several centuries. Several MacDonald Lords have resided at Saddell over the centuries, and it was a refuge to Robert the Bruce during Scottish War of Independence. The Castle can be hired out for accomodation through the Landmark Trust.
Today the castle is also known for being the backdrop to Paul MacCartney's Wings hit single, Mull of Kintyre, and for the Anthony Gormley Sculpture which stands on the rocks in front of the castle.
